    Trump said in his State of the Union speech that “we will pursue our Manifest Destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars,” throwing down the gauntlet for the next space race. Some say the colonization of Mars is still science fiction, while others say we should prioritize efforts in that direction, given the geopolitical considerations and the fact that NASA, SpaceX, and other private companies could all play a role. Should the U.S. prioritize the exploration of colonizing Mars? Those arguing “yes” say Mars is the clear target for ensuring humanity’s survival, and the U.S. should do it first before China or other nations. Advancing Mars exploration would also lead to further developments in technology, science, and our understanding of Mars. But those arguing “no” say it’s not in our best interests to start colonizing the Red Planet. Starting a new Space Race with China could backfire and challenging environmental issues, including very little oxygen its atmosphere, suggest habitability is unlikely. As we look to the stars, we debate the question: Should the U.S. Prioritize Settling Mars?

Nina Jankowicz

CEO of The American Sunlight Project; Former Executive Director of the Department of Homeland Security's Disinformation Governance Board

Nina Jankowicz is an internationally recognized expert on disinformation and democratization, one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in AI, and the author of “How to Lose the Information War” and “How to Be a Woman Online”. She is currently the founder and CEO of The American Sunlight Project, which aims to fight online disinformation. From March to May 2022, Jankowicz served as the head of the Disinformation Governance Board of the United States Department of Homeland Security and she was the Vice President at the UK-based Centre for Information Resilience, a social enterprise focused on countering disinformation, from 2022 to 2024. Jankowicz has advised governments, international organizations, and tech companies and testified before the U.S. Congress, U.K. Parliament, and the European Parliament. From 2017 to 2022, Jankowicz held fellowships at the Wilson Center, where she was affiliated with the Kennan Institute and the Science and Technology Innovation Program.
