Jonathan Rothwell
Jonathan Rothwell is Gallup’s principal economist, where he researches and publishes on a broad range of social science topics and helps Gallup clients design and execute research to answer their questions and address societal challenges. His publications at Gallup have included an analysis of married Americans’ well-being versus single adults, who supported various presidential candidates during the 2016 election, the causes of slowing U.S. productivity growth, the effect of trade competition on regional economic outcomes, and the validity of using consumer ratings to assess colleges. Rothwell is also a visiting scholar at the George Washington University Public Policy Institute and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program. In 2019, Rothwell published a book on the fundamental causes of income inequality called “A Republic of Equals: A Manifesto for a Just Society.” He previously contributed analysis to The New York Times’ The Upshot column from 2017 to 2020. He publishes opinion pieces and essays to a variety of other high-profile outlets. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.
