John Milhiser

John Milhiser was the US Attorney for the US District Court for the Central District of Illinois from 2018 until 2021. As the US Attorney, he prosecuted federal criminal cases in his district’s 46 counties and served as legal counsel for the US government. He also partnered with the court and service providers to establish specialized court programs for non-violent, first-time drug offenders, defendants with mental health needs, and for veterans with specialized needs. Prior to this role, he was the State’s Attorney and an Assistant State’s Attorney for Sangamon County, where he prosecuted serious violent offenses, including first-degree murder, armed violence, sexual assault, and the attempted murder of police officers, and has previously worked in private practice. While a State’s Attorney, Milhiser established a program in the State’s Attorney’s Office that hosts a courthouse facility dog to assist victims and witnesses as they participate in the prosecution of violent crimes like child sexual abuse and murder. Milhiser has previously served as the President of the Illinois State’s Attorneys Association. He received his JD from the University of Illinois College of Law and his undergraduate degree from James Madison University.
