Freddie deBoer

Dr. Freddie deBoer is a writer, editor, and academic. He is the author of “The Cult of Smart: How Our Broken Education System Perpetuates Social Injustice” (2020), about meritocracy, education, and the potential for a more humane society. He regularly publishes in academic journals on the subject of standardized testing and is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post, Current Affairs, Politico, Jacobin, and The Guardian, among others. Dr. deBoer received his PhD from Purdue University, where he submitted a dissertation titled “The CLA+ and the Two Cultures: Writing Assessment and Educational Testing,” and has worked in institutional planning, research, and assessment at Brooklyn College.
